Poukai
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In Polynesian mythology, Poukai or Pouakai is a bird monster who ate humans.
The Poukai, however, may not have been entirely mythological. When the Maori first arrived in New Zealand it is believed that a bird known as Haast's Eagle, which is now extinct, was still in existence. This giant bird of prey is believed to have hunted Moa weighing up to 300 pounds. Such a creature could have very well killed and eaten humans.
